<< Chapter 17 Verse 11

SlOkam – Original

abhisandhAya thu palam dhambhArtham api chaiva yath |
ijyathE bharathaSrEshta tham yagyam vidhdhi rAjasam ||

word-by-word meaning (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

bharatha SrEshta – Oh best among the descendants of bharatha!
palam abhisandhAya thu – with the desire for material benefits
dhambhArtham api cha Eva – only for show
ya: ijyathE – the yagya which is performed
tham yagyam – that yagya
rAjasam vidhdhi – know it as rAjasa yagya (sacrifice in the mode of passion)

Simple Translation (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

Oh best among the descendants of bharatha! The yagya which is performed with the desire for material benefits and only for show, know that as rAjasa yagya (sacrifice in the mode of passion).

Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy’s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam

‘But that Yajña, know, Bharata-Chief! is Rājasa, which with an aim for fruit and for display—, one performs.’

Know that Yajña to be of the Rajas-character, which is done for the sake of fruit, and which is vitiated further by the desire for notoriety.
