Chapter 18

Simple

yad ahaṅkāram āśritya
na yotsya iti manyase
mithyaiṣa vyavasāyas te
prakṛtis tvāṁ niyokṣyati

‘If by embracing egotism, thou resolvest: ‘I
will not fight,’ that resolve of thine shall be vain; (for) nature will impel thee.’

Egotism (ahaṅkāra)=The notion of self-ness or freedom in deciding for oneself what is good and what is bad.

If by assuming this independence, thou shouldst determine to thyself: ‘I will not fight’, in disregard of My Mandate (to the contrary), thy independent resolve shall prove to be a failure, inasmuch as thy nature (prakṛiti) will compel thee to the combat; for thy nature will govern thee usurping My place, because thou ownest Me not.
