na caitad vidmaḥ kataran no garīyo
yad vā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ
yān eva hatvā na jijīviṣāmas
te ’vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ

‘Those same hosts of Dhṛitarāshtra, by killing whom we desire not to live, are confronting us. We do not know whether we may conquer them, or they us. Which then is better for us? (begged food or blood-bought food?)’
