SlOkam – Original

sanjaya uvAcha-

ithyaham vAsudhEvasya pArthasya cha mahAthmana: |
samvAdhamimamaSraushamadhbhutham rOmaharshaNam ||

word-by-word meaning (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

sanjaya uvAcha – sanjaya says

ithi – in this manner
vAsudhEvasya – between krishNa, the son of vasudhEva
mahAthmana: pArthasya cha – arjuna who is a very wise person
imam – this
rOmaharshaNam adhbhutham samvAdham – amazing conversation which causes goose bumps
aham aSrausham – I heard

Simple Translation (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

In this manner, I heard this amazing conversation between krishNa, the son of vasudhEva and arjuna who is a very wise person , which causes goose bumps.

Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy’s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam

Sañjaya (now) addressed Dhṛitarāshtra who had questioned him as to what his own sons (the Kauravas) and the Pāṇḍavas were going to enact in the (impending) war:

‘Thus did I hear the discourse between Vāsudeva and the highly wise Pārtha, so wondrous as to set the hairs athrill.’

Vāsudeva = The son of Vasudeva (showing how the Divine condescends to man hiding Its Divinity by the very mask of humility and fleshly form to which mankind is accustomed).

Pārtha = (Arjuna), the son of His(Vāsudeva’s) paternal aunt (implying how dearly the Divine loves all its creation.)

Mahātma = (Lit: Great-Souled): is adjectival to Arjuna meaning, ‘one who is eminently wise,’ inasmuch as he has betaken himself to His (Vāsudeva’s) Foot-Pair as his Rest.

Thus did I hear, etc = I gathered this conversation —so wondrous as to set the hairs athrill— just as it passed (between the interlocutors).
