Chapter 6

Simple

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
asaṁśayaṁ mahā-bāho
mano durnigrahaṁ calam
abhyāsena tu kaunteya
vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate

Śrī Bhagavān (Lord Kṛishṇa) responds:—

‘Doubtless, O mighty armed! the roving mind is difficult to subdue; but by industry[1. Abhyāsa = Exercise or effort or exertion or the Practice of Meditation as laid down in verses 10 ff.] and dispassion[2. Vairāgya = freedom from passions, contempt for life, dispassion, unworldliness, asceticism, non-attachment.], Kaunteya! it is governable[3. Cp. Pātanjala Yoga-Sūtra I-12. ‘Abhyāsa vairāgyābhyām tan-niro-dhaḥ’ also Cp. Bh. Gita. VIII-8 and XII-9. Vide also Annie Besant’s ‘Path of Discipleship’, pp: 50-53.].’
