SlOkam – Original

adhyEshyathE cha ya imam dharmyam samvAdham AvayO: |

word-by-word meaning (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

ya: – one
AvayO: – happened between the two of us
imam dharmyam samvAdham – SAsthram which was a conversation about the means for liberation
adhyEshyathE – recites
thEna – by him
gyAna yagyEna aham ishta: syAm – worshipped with the gyAna yagya (the service through knowledge)
ithi – this
mE mathi: – my opinion.

Simple Translation (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

One who recites the SAsthram which was a conversation about the means for liberation between the two of us, has worshipped me with the gyAna yagya (the service through knowledge); this is my opinion.

Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy’s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam

‘Whoso, furthermore, will recite this Pious Discourse between us, I shall consider Myself paid by him the wisdom-sacrifice. Such is My mind.’

My mind or will is this, that whoso will rehearse our conversation brimming with (righteousness), I shall consider Myself served by him with a Sacrifice (Yajña)— the wisdom-sacrifice, consisting in the rehearsal of this our Conversation.

The wisdom-sacrifice is that which is inculcated in this Conversation. The mere recital is tantamount to having made a sacrifice to Me.

Chapter 18

<< Chapter 18 Verse 68

SlOkam – Original

na cha thasmAn manushyEshu kaSchin mE priyakruththama: |
bhavithA na cha mE thasmAdhanya: priyatharO bhuvi ||

word-by-word meaning (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

bhuvi – in this world
manushyEshu – among men
thasmAth anya: kaSchith – other than the one who explains this SAsthram
mE – for me
priyakruththama: na cha – none who has performed a dearer service
thasmAth anya: – other than him
mE – for me
priyathara: bhavithA na cha – there will be none dearer in the future as well.

Simple Translation (based on puththUr krishNamAchArya swAmy’s thamizh translation)

In this world, among men, there is none who has performed a dearer service for me, other than the one who explains this SAsthram, and there will be none dearer in the future as well.

Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy’s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam

‘There is not one among mankind who does Me
dearer service than he; nor shall there be on earth any one dearer to Me than he.’

There has not been in the past one man in all mankind, who has done to Me dearer service than he, and one such is not going to be in the future. The reference in this verse to those outside the God-lovers, is with the object of strongly placing them in contrast (with the Lovers). The exposure of the wicked is more imperious than the laudation of the good in as much as the former are most despicable.
