mana:prasAdha: saumyathvam maunam Athmavinigraha: |
bhAvasaṁSudhdhir ithyEthath thapO mAnasam uchyathE ||

mana: prasAdha: – Keeping the mind clear and free from anger etc
saumyathvam – thinking about the well-being of others
maunam – controlling the speech through mind
Athma vinigraha: – restraining the mind from worldly matters and engaging it in the meditation of apt aspects
bhAva samsudhdhi: – being without any thought other than AthmA
ithi Ethath – all these
mAnasam thapa: – penance of the mind
uchyathE – said

Keeping the mind clear and free from anger etc, thinking about the well-being of others, controlling the speech through mind, restraining the mind from worldly matters and engaging it in the meditation of apt aspects, being without any thought other than AthmA are all said to be the penance of the mind.

‘That is called Mental Austerity, which consists in good temper, benevolence, quietude, self-control, and purity of purpose.’

Manaḥ-prasādaḥ = Good-temper, or mind kept free of anger etc.,

Saumyatvam = Benevolence, or mind filled with love for others’ happiness.

Maunam = Quietude, or by will restraining the function of speech.

Ātma-vinigrahaḥ = Self-control or fixing the mind or keeping the mind engaged in the (holy) objects of contemplation.

Bhāva-saṃśuddhiḥ = Purity of purpose = Absence of thoughts wandering away on subjects other than ātma.

These constitute the Mental Tapas or Austerity of the mind.

Simple

manaḥ-prasādaḥ saumyatvaṁ
maunam ātma-vinigrahaḥ
bhāva-saṁśuddhir ity etat
tapo mānasam ucyate
