Son of Kunti = Arjuna.]! produce pleasures and pains through \u2018cold-heat\u2019[2. The sense-contacts with external phenomena is sensations which are the sense-with-mind-contacts, &#8216;cold-heat&#8217;, etc., and then follow the reactions, pleasures and pains.] experiences. They come and go, and are inconstant. Take them coolly, Bh\u0101rata[3. Descendent of Bharata = Arjuna. &#8230;]!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The qualities viz: sound, touch, color, taste, and smell, with their functioning seats viz., the senses, are called <em>m\u0101tras<\/em> (or <em>tan-m\u0101tras<\/em>), because they are the evolutes from <em>m\u0101tras<\/em> or the rudimentary elements. The contacts of the senses with sound etc., produce cold, heat, soft, hard, etc., experiences, and cause pleasures and pains[4. The sense-contacts with external phenomena is sensations which are the sense-with-mind-contacts, &#8216;cold-heat&#8217;, etc., and then follow the reactions, pleasures and pains.].<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expression \u201ccold and heat\u201d[5. Bear them up with courage till thou carriest out thy \u015a\u0101stra-enjoined war etc., to completion. As these experiences accrue and depart, they are but fit to be tolerated (i.e., disregarded) by men of courage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also they are un-enduring (<em>anitya<\/em>), meaning that him, &#8211; whose karma (i.e., the fruit of deeds done) has ceased, (as in the case of the <em>mukta<\/em>, or the freed soul), &#8211; the \u2018cold-heat\u2019[6.
