Having been in the past, it cannot be that it is <em>not<\/em> going to be in the future. It is birthless (<em>aja<\/em>), eternal (<em>nitya<\/em>), constant (<em>\u015b\u0101\u015bvata<\/em>), and ancient (<em>pur\u0101\u1e47a<\/em>), and is never destroyed though the body be destroyed.\u2019[1. Cf. &#8216;Na j\u0101yate mriyate v\u0101 vipaschin-n\u0101yam kutaschin na babh\u016bva kaschit, ajo nitya\u015b \u015b\u0101\u015bvatoyam pur\u0101\u1e47o nahanyate hanyam\u0101ne \u015bar\u012bre.&#8217; (Kat. II-18).]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For reasons set forth, the characteristics which are natural to insentient (inert) bodies such as birth, death etc., do not pertain to <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>, for it has no changes on account of its eternality. The bodily experiences known as birth and death do not affect <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>, and hence the expressions \u201cit is not born, nor doth it die.\u201d It cannot be said that having been <em>before<\/em> a <em>kalpa<\/em>[2. Brahm\u0101&#8217;s age.], <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em> is not going to be <em>after<\/em> a <em>kalpa<\/em>. Such births and deaths, at beginnings and ends of <em>kalp\u0101s<\/em>, the \u0100gam\u0101s (Scriptures) say, as happening to Praj\u0101pati[3. The Lord of creatures, lit: meaning the four-faced Brahm\u0101 who is charged with the minor creations falling within the limits of a single globular system in the infinite kosmos, called brahm\u0101n\u1e0da (or Brahm\u0101&#8217;s egg).] and others, are with reference to their bodies, but do not affect <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u0100tm\u0101 <\/em>which pervades all bodies is therefore unborn (<em>aja<\/em>); and therefore it is eternal and constant.
