This verse is aphoristic of all the Yoga philosophy. See Introduction.].&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u015aruti<\/em>=<em>\u015aravanam<\/em>=hearing. From your hearing (or instruction) from us, your reason is greatly cultured, i.e., it begins to reflect on the peerless, eternal and exceedingly subtle category (the <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>). When this reason, intelligence or wisdom, which by nature is steadfast and uniform, can firmly be planted in the mind, &#8211; made pure by the practice of unselfish work, &#8211; then shall you achieve \u2018yoga\u2019 or <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>-illumination<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purport, so far, is this: That practice of works (<em>Karma-yoga<\/em>)[2. <em>Yoga<\/em> here means method, path or means. &#8216;<em>Karma-Yoga<\/em>&#8216; is thus &#8216;the method of Works&#8217; or doing deeds of virtue as inculcated in Scriptural and other ethical codes.], preceded by a knowledge of <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em> as gathered from \u015a\u0101stra [7. \u015a\u0101stra means laws, learning, and therefore spiritual laws or science embodied in the Vedas or S\u1e5butis, etc.], develops a certain illumination or consciousness called \u2018<em>sthita-praj\u00f1at\u0101\u00a0<\/em>[8. And this \u2018<em>sthita-praj\u00f1at\u0101<\/em>\u2019 or the sustained effort of consciousness will result in \u2018yoga\u2019 i.e., <em>\u0100tm\u0101<\/em>-illumination or <em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>-consciousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So lectured, P\u0101rth a[9.
