In the Third Lecture, it was shown that Karma-Yoga<\/em> (Path of Works) alone, was best fitted for the matter-bound moksha-aspirant, and that therefore this candidate was not competent, all at once, to enter on a course of J\u00f1\u0101na-Yoga<\/em> (Path of Knowledge).<\/span><\/p>\n

It was also shown, with reasons, that even to the j\u00f1\u0101na-yogi<\/em>, karma<\/em>(works)\u2014when performed with ideal mechanic impersonality, \u2014(a-kart\u1e5bitv-\u0101nusandh\u0101na<\/em>), was preferred.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was further shown that, to persons of light and leading (vi\u015bish\u1e6datay\u0101 vyapade\u015by\u0101\u1e25<\/em>), the practice of Karma-Yoga<\/em> was an imperious necessity (for reasons stated).<\/span>
\nThe object of this, the Fourth Lecture, is to further emphasize the necessity there is for Karma-Yoga<\/em>, by declaring that it was taught (to great men) at the beginning of the Manvantara[1. The present Manvantara is Vaivasvata Manvantara. A Mah\u0101-kalpa is the life-period of Brahm\u0101, which is one hundred (Brahm\u0101) years. Each day of the year is called a Kalpa. A Kalpa consists of fourteen Manvantaras.
\nEach Manvantara is equal to 71 3\/7 Mah\u0101yug\u0101s, a Mah\u0101yug\u0101 being a group composed of the four Yugas, amounting to 4,320,000 human years. Fifty years of Brahm\u0101 have now passed away. We are in his fifty-first year, seventh Manvantara (presided by Vaivasvata-Manu = Manu the Son of Vivasvat). Of the 71 3\/7 Mah\u0101yugas, the present Mah\u0101yuga is the twenty-eighth, of which the present Yuga is Kali, the first quarter of which is now closing (5000 years). The discourse between K\u1e5bish\u1e47a and Arjuna, was in Dv\u0101para, the preceding Yuga to Kali, or more than 5000 years ago.]; and to show how karma-yoga<\/em> partakes of the nature of j\u00f1\u0101na-yoga<\/em>, by reason of knowlege (j\u00f1\u0101na<\/em>) underlying work (karma<\/em>); \u2014(the Lecture) winding up by a discussion of the nature of karma-yoga<\/em>, its varieties, and the importance of the knowledge-aspect inherent in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Episodically, the Truths (viz<\/em> : purpose etc.,) regarding Avat\u0101ras (or Divine Incarnations, or \u2018God made flesh\u2019) are dwelt on.<\/span><\/p>\n
