{"id":2371,"date":"2016-11-13T22:10:19","date_gmt":"2016-11-13T22:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=2371"},"modified":"2016-11-13T22:10:19","modified_gmt":"2016-11-13T22:10:19","slug":"5-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/5-7\/","title":{"rendered":"5.7 yOgayukthO viSuddhAthmA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 5<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/5-6\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 5 verse 6<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/5-7-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>yOgayukthO viSuddhAthmA vijithAthmA jithEndriya: |<\/em><br \/>\n<em> sarvabhUthAthma bhUthAthmA kurvannapi na lipyathE ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning  <\/h3>\n<p>yOga yuktha: &#8211; being a practitioner of karma yOga<br \/>\nviSudhdhAthmA &#8211; (as a result of that) having a pure heart<br \/>\nvijithAthmA &#8211; (as a result of that) having a controlled mind<br \/>\njithEndhriya: &#8211; (as a result of that) having control over all senses<br \/>\nsarva bhUthAthma bhUthAthmA &#8211; being the AthmA who looks at all AthmAs (of celestial beings, human beings etc) as his own<br \/>\nkurvan api &#8211; while performing all activities<br \/>\nna lipyathE &#8211; is not bound by bewilderment such as confusing the body to be self etc.<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation  <\/h3>\n<p>One who is a practitioner of karma yOga, who is (as a result of that) having a pure heart, who is (as a result of that) having a controlled mind, who is (as a result of that) having control over all senses, who looks at all AthmAs (of celestial beings, human beings etc) as his own, while performing all activities, is not bound by bewilderment such as confusing the body to be self etc.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;The (karma-)yoga-united, pure-minded, whose mind and senses are under control, who looks on the \u0101tmas of all beings as his \u0101tma, is not tainted (by works), though he works.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The performer of Karma-yoga is he who fulfils the sacred canons of \u015a\u0101stra, which are but Modes of Worship to the Supernal Spirit (<em>Parama-purusha<\/em>[1. <em>Parama-Purusha<\/em> = Synonym <em>Purushottama<\/em> (&#8216;The Super-excellent Person&#8217;, the 24th name of God, (vide also, P\u0101ta\u00f1jala Yoga-S\u016btra I.24, (which says <em>purusha-vi\u015bes\u1e25<\/em>) &#8211; Purusha is the common term to denote a <em>thinking<\/em> substance from an <em>unthinking<\/em> substance. <em>Utpurusha<\/em>=bound soul; <em>uttara-purusha<\/em>=liberated soul, <em>uttama-purusha<\/em>=the ever-free soul; <em>Purushottama<\/em>=Soul Supreme=God.): <em>Purusha<\/em> means etymologically He who grants abundance; &#8220;<em>puru=bahu, sanoti=dad\u0101ti.<\/em>&#8221; Thus Parama-Purusha means the Supreme all-Giver.]).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By this, one becomes purified of mind (<em>vi\u015buddh\u0101tma<\/em>). He is <em>vijit\u0101tma<\/em> (having mind under control), because he is absorbed in the performance of the said Worship. Hence, he is <em>jit-endriya<\/em> (who has governed the senses.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is <em>sarva-bh\u016bt-\u0101tma-bh\u016bt-\u0101tma<\/em>, or he who is enabled \u2014by the way he performs work with the knowledge of the true nature of the performer thereof, \u0101tma,\u2014 to contemplate on the \u0101tmas abiding in all beings such as devas etc., as on his own \u0101tma; for the essential nature of \u0101tma(-principle), wherever it may abide, \u2014devas etc.,\u2014 is the same to the meditator of \u0101tma-nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The true nature of \u0101tma is not in the changeful matter which constitutes the bodies of devas etc. Bodies vary, but the informing \u0101tmas therein are one like the other, in their essential nature of being conscious entities, as viewed distinct from the (non-conscious) bodies (veiling them).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gita tells us further on this fact that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Faultless indeed is <em>brahma<\/em> (\u0101tma), and equal\u2019.
