{"id":3444,"date":"2017-01-02T19:16:26","date_gmt":"2017-01-02T19:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=3444"},"modified":"2024-03-04T09:07:03","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T09:07:03","slug":"8-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-3\/","title":{"rendered":"8.3 aksharam brahma paramam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 8<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-2\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 8 verse 2<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-3-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>SrI bhagavAn uvAcha<br \/>\n<em>aksharam brahma paramam svabhAvO\u2019dhyAthmam uchyathE | <\/em><br \/>\n<em>bhUthabhAvOdhbhavakarO visarga: karmasamgyitha: ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning<\/h3>\n<p>SrI bhagavAn uvAcha &#8211; Shri Krishna said<br \/>\nbrahma &#8211; &#8220;brahma&#8221; is<br \/>\nparamam aksharam &#8211; the AthmA which is relieved from any connection to matter;<br \/>\nadhyAthmam &#8211; &#8220;adhyAthmam&#8221; is<br \/>\nsvabhAva: uchyathE &#8211; nothing but matter;<br \/>\nbhUthabhAva udhbhavakara: visarga: &#8211; the act of emission (of male sperm into female ovary)\u00a0 for procreation<br \/>\nkarma samgyitha: &#8211; is called &#8220;karma&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation<\/h3>\n<p>Shri Krishna said, &#8216; &#8220;brahma&#8221; is the AthmA which is relieved from any connection to matter; &#8220;adhyAthmam&#8221; is\u00a0 nothing but matter; the act of emission (of male sperm into female ovary) for procreation is called &#8220;karma&#8221;. &#8216;<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blest Bhagav\u0101n responded thus:-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;The superior, imperishable (<em>akshara<\/em>=\u0101tm\u0101), is Brahma; nature (<em>svabh\u0101va<\/em>) is called Adhy\u0101tma; and that act of emission by which beings are brought forth is signified as Karma.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is designated as <em>Tad-brahma<\/em> is the superior-indestructible (soul=<em>paramam aksharam<\/em>). <em>Aksharam<\/em> is that which is not subject to decay, and is the collective name for <em>kshetraj\u00f1as<\/em> (the informers of uninformed matter-stuff= matter-joined souls). So declare such \u015aruti\u2014texts as :<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<em>Avyakta<\/em> (indiscernible compound of spirit-matter) merges into <em>akshara<\/em> (the indivisible compound), <em>akshara<\/em> into tamas (the impartite compound).\u2019[1. <em>Sub: Up\u00b0<\/em>: Avyaktam akshare l\u012byate, aksharam tamasi l\u012byate.<em>Tamas<\/em>=chaos.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <em>Paramam aksharam<\/em>, the superior-indestructible (or indivisible) is \u0101tma-nature, divorced or disengaged from <em>prak\u1e5biti<\/em> (or <em>akshara<\/em>=the spirit-matter amalgam).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<em>Svabh\u0101va<\/em>=Nature, is called <em>adhy\u0101tma<\/em>.\u2019 The term <em>adhy\u0101tma<\/em> signifies Nature=matter, or that subtle elemental stuff and its accompanying erratic tendencies \u2014the non-soul which adheres to soul, and which is referred to in the <em>Panch-\u0101gni-vidy\u0101<\/em>[2. The subtile quintuple process, the last of which becomes the seminal fluid. It is the evolution of the soul in subtle matter, by a five-fold condensation or concentration. This is a spiritual descent into embodiment, called the Sacrifice of the Five Fires,<br \/>\nVide <em>Chh: Up\u00b0:<\/em> v-3 to 10 for a description.], as that which has to be known (by the aspirants).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both these (<em>akshara<\/em> and <em>adhy\u0101tma<\/em>) have to be known by the emancipation-seekers (<em>mumukshu<\/em>), \u2014the one <em>akshara<\/em> (soul) as that which is worthy of election, and <em>adhy\u0101tma<\/em> (matter) as that which is worthy of rejection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next is <em>karma<\/em>, \u2014act, \u2014referring to that emittive act which results in the (final) fashioning out of creatures, the becoming human etc, \u2014(embodied states). The emittive act (<em>visarga<\/em>) which results into this state, is the act of intercourse with the female.
