They say this is an exalted goal, a goal of glory, reaching which, they return not (to re-birth).&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different in principle and kind than the non-intelligent <em>avyakta<\/em>, or indistinct (primordial) matter is this superior principle, <em>viz<\/em>; the other <em>avyakta<\/em> or subtle indistinct principle (\u0101tma), the principle characterized by intelligence or consciousness (j\u00f1\u0101na), contra-distinguished for this reason, from the previously spoken <em>avyakta<\/em>. It is called <em>avyakta<\/em>, or indistinct, for it is beyond any perceptive faculty to cognize as a thing cognized or demonstrated. The meaning is that it is a principle self-conscious, and is thus unique in its nature.[1. These are the Two Postulates of <em>Achit<\/em> and <em>Chit<\/em>; vide, <em>Bh: Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/7-4-original\/\">VII-4<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/7-5-original\/\">5<\/a>.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>San\u0101tana\u1e25<\/em>=ancient=eternal, because not subject to combination (or aggregation) or resolution (disintegration); that, which does not disperse or dissipate, when all the things, the elements \u2014ether etc\u2014, rudimental as well as derivative, dissolve, though it abides in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is called the indistinct (<em>avyakta<\/em>), and imperishable, (<em>akshara<\/em>) in the texts:\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018But those who worship the indefinite [i.e., indefinable] <em>akshara<\/em>, <em>avyakta<\/em>\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/12-3-original\/\">XII-3<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018It is called <em>k\u016btastha<\/em> (the fixed), <em>akshara<\/em> (the undecaying)\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/15-16-original\/\">XV-16<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, the versed in the Vedas declare to be the exalted state, or goal. This <em>akshara<\/em>, the exalted goal (<em>param\u0101m gatim<\/em>), refered to already in verse:\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Whoso goes, leaving the body, goes to the <em>exalted goal<\/em>\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-3-original\/\">VIII-3<\/a>), is \u0101tma, existent in its pure state, isolated from matter (<em>prak\u1e5biti<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This state of \u0101tma\u2019s own nature realised is that, from which, when reached, there is no reversion (to re-birth or union again with matter); and it is called, \u2018My <em>paramam dh\u0101ma<\/em>\u2019 or My superior place or department, over which I hold rule, or sway. The other place or department over which I exercise control is the non-intelligent matter; the other place or seat over which I hold similar control is the <em>j\u012bva-prak\u1e5biti<\/em>, or the life (or \u0101tma)-substance which is incorporate with the non-intelligent matter-substance. And My superior place or seat over which I have control (<em>paramam niyamana-sth\u0101nam<\/em>) is the mukta (liberated)-nature, disjoined from the non-intelligent material substance\u2019s connection. And this is the place or state from which there is no return.[1. Cp: with <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/5-17-original\/\">V-17<\/a>, where this non-returning state was shadowed forth.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or the term <em>dh\u0101ma<\/em> may signify luminosity, luminous meaning intelligence or consciousness, (the characteristic attribute of \u0101tma).
