{"id":3659,"date":"2017-01-29T19:45:33","date_gmt":"2017-01-29T19:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=3659"},"modified":"2024-04-14T10:01:53","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T10:01:53","slug":"8-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-28\/","title":{"rendered":"8.28 vEdhEshu yagyEshu thapa:su chaiva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 8<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-27\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 8 verse 27<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/8-28-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>vEdhEshu yagyEshu thapassu chaiva dhAnEshu yath puNyapalam pradhishtam |<\/em><br \/>\n<em> athyEthi thath sarvam idham vidhithvA yOgI param sthAnam upaithi chAdhyam ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning<\/h3>\n<p>vEdhEshu &#8211; to recite vEdhas<br \/>\nyagyEshu &#8211; yagyas (sacrifices)<br \/>\nthapassu cha &#8211; and different types of thapas (austerities)<br \/>\ndhAnE cha Eva &#8211; and to engage in charity<br \/>\nyath puNya palam &#8211; the results of that puNya (virtuous deed)<br \/>\npradhishtam &#8211; explained (in SAsthram)<br \/>\nthath sarvam &#8211; all those<br \/>\nidham &#8211; the glories of mine, the paramapurusha (supreme lord), which are explained in these two chapters (7th and 8th)<br \/>\nvidhithvA &#8211; knowing, and by that knowledge<br \/>\nathyEthi &#8211; transcends (the results of all such puNya)<br \/>\nyOgI &#8211; one who practices bhakthi yOgam (becoming a gyAni)<br \/>\nAdhyam &#8211; ancient, beginning-less<br \/>\nparam &#8211; supreme<br \/>\nsthAnam &#8211; SrIvaikuNta lOka (the divine abode of SrIman nArAyaNa)<br \/>\nupaithi &#8211; attains<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation<\/h3>\n<p>Whatever results of that puNya (virtuous deed) explained in SAsthram for reciting vEdhas, engaging in yagyas, different types of thapas and charities, one who practices bhakthi yOgam (becoming a gyAni) knows the glories of mine, the paramapurusha (supreme lord), which are explained in these two chapters (7th and 8th), and by that knowledge transcends all those results and attains the ancient, beginning-less supreme SrIvaikuNta lOka (the divine abode of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">SrIman nArAyaNa<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Whatever fruit is declared for Vedas, Sacrifices, Austerities and Gifts, the yogi transcends all by knowing this; and reaches the state, supreme and primal.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>For Vedas<\/em>=(or prosecuting the studies of the Vedas, <em>viz<\/em>.,, Rik, Yajus, S\u0101ma and Atharva.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yaj\u00f1as<\/em>=the various ritualistic Sacrifices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Tapas<\/em>=austerities, mortification by fasting, rigorous penances etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>D\u0101na<\/em>=gifts, giving in charity, philanthropic works etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these and such like are merit-bringing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever rewards are assigned (in the \u015a\u0101stras) for those pious practices, he, who knows the greatness of the nature of Bhagav\u0101n declared in these two discourses, transcends. This is to mean that the knowledge of this brings him so much blissfulness that he makes light of the rewards appointed for <em>Vedas<\/em> etc., considering them as insignificant as a blade of grass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yogi<\/em>=become yogi or j\u00f1\u0101ni or God-lover.
