{"id":5476,"date":"2017-08-18T21:59:39","date_gmt":"2017-08-18T21:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=5476"},"modified":"2017-08-18T21:59:39","modified_gmt":"2017-08-18T21:59:39","slug":"13-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/13-16\/","title":{"rendered":"13.16 avibhaktham cha bhUthEshu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chapter 13<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/13-15\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 13 verse 15<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/13-16-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>avibhaktham cha bhUthEshu vibhaktham iva cha sthitham |<\/em><br \/>\n<em>bhUthabharthru cha thath gyEyam grasishNu prabhavishNu cha ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning  <\/h3>\n<p>thath &#8211; that AthmA<br \/>\nbhUthEshu cha &#8211; (though present) in all bodies (such as dhEva (celestial), manushya (human), thiryak (animal), sthAvara (plant))<br \/>\navibhaktham &#8211; remains undivided;<\/p>\n<p>(still)<br \/>\nvibhaktham iva cha sthitham &#8211; (for the ignorant) appears to be in divided (as dhEva etc);<br \/>\nbhUtha bharthru cha &#8211; as the supporter of creatures (such as dhEva etc)<br \/>\ngrasishNu (cha) &#8211; as the devourer (of food prepared using creatures)<br \/>\nprabhavishNu cha &#8211; as the cause (in the form of semen, foetus etc) for changes<br \/>\ngyEyam &#8211; is to be known (as different from the creatures)<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation  <\/h3>\n<p>That AthmA, (though present) in all bodies (such as dhEva (celestial), manushya (human), thiryak (animal), sthAvara (plant)) remains undivided; still, (for the ignorant) appears to be in divided (as dhEva etc); due to the AthmA being the supporter of creatures (such as dhEva etc), the devourer (of food prepared using creatures) and the cause (in the form of semen, foetus etc) for changes, it is to be known (as different from the creatures).<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p>&#8216;Undivided among beings, it abides as divided.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>By its intrinsic property of \u2018knower,\u2019 it is void of divisions, abiding everywhere among creatures, deva, man etc. But to (spiritually) unwise people, it appears divided as: \u2018This is deva\u2019; \u2018This is man\u2019 etc.<\/p>\n<p>From what is said in the Stanza: \u2018He who knows this etc.,\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/13-1-original\/\">XIII-1<\/a>), it is understood that the soul being \u2018knower,\u2019 it is possible to comprehend it as an entity separate from the body, though in expressions like: \u2018I am deva,\u2019 \u2018I am man\u2019 etc., it (soul = I) is always comprehended with reference to the body (its cloak). And now it will be shown how to comprehend it as a distinct entity, in other ways:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;And as supporter of elements it is to be known; as devourer and as causer.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inasmuch as it supports or holds together the combination of the elements, earth etc., known as body, it is to be known or is capable of being known as the \u2018supporter,\u2019 as contradistinguished from the \u2018supported (body).\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, it is <em>grasish\u1e47u<\/em>=devourer of material elements such as food.
