In the making of these two (body and senses) to function the soul envisaged matter alone is the cause. That is to say that all work \u2014or manifested activity\u2014 as means to afford enjoyment or experiences (to the soul) is dependent on matter in its state of \u2018the field\u2019 impulsed by the soul. The soul simply carries with it the function of the \u2018director\u2019 or \u2018superintendent\u2019 (adhish\u1e6dhat\u1e5bi). In this sense, the following Ved\u0101nta Aphorism applies to the soul <em>viz<\/em>:\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018(The soul is) agent, because \u015a\u0101stra\u2019s purport is (then) fulfilled,\u2019[2. <em>Br: S\u016b:<\/em> II-3-33: \u2018Kart\u0101 \u015b\u0101str\u0101rthavatv\u0101t.\u2019] etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is agency (or being the doer), to the soul but the being the cause of initiating effort through the medium (or by the governing) of matter?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The soul <em>is the cause for experiencing joy and grief<\/em>: means that the matter-consorting soul is the seat for such experiences.[3. Consult <em>Bh: G\u012b:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/3-27-original\/\">III-27<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/3-29-original\/\">29<\/a> in this connection. Also read <em>Bh\u0101g:<\/em> III-26-9: \u2018K\u0101rya-k\u0101ra\u1e47a-kart\u1e5bitve etc.\u2019]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus difference of function each appropriate to matter and soul \u2014<em>when in conjunction<\/em>,\u2014 has been mentioned.
