These three qualities namely sathvam (goodness), rajas (passion) and thamas (ignorance) which are always united with matter are binding the jIvAthmA in his body, who (naturally) does not have the inferiority of being together with the qualities and is dwelling in the body.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Satvam, Rajas, Tamas[1. Vide footnote 1 to <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/2-45-original\">verse 2.45<\/a>], are qualities matter-born, which, O Great-armed! bind the imperishable ego in the body.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satvam, Rajas and Tamas are the three qualities (or affections or humours or tempers) of matter=those <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/inhere#English\">inhering<\/a> in the matter-stuff.
