Chapter 14<\/a><\/p>\n << Chapter 14 verse 7<\/a><\/p>\n Simple<\/a><\/p>\n tamas tv aj\u00f1\u0101na-ja\u1e41 viddhi ‘As for Tamas, Bh\u0101rata! it begets ignorance, fascinating all embodied (beings): by listlessness doth it bind (one) to sloth and sleep.’<\/span><\/p>\n Aj\u00f1\u0101na<\/em>=ignorance is that which is the reverse of knowledge or wisdom. J\u00f1\u0101na<\/em> or wisdom is the accurate or right perception of things, and ignorance is perverted or wrong perception. And Tamas<\/em> (lit:<\/em> darkness) is the diametrically opposed or completely reversed perception of what a thing actually is.<\/span><\/p>\n Mohanam<\/em>=that which deludes men into obtuse knowledge = Tamas.<\/span><\/p>\n This Tamas, being thus the root of pram\u0101da<\/em>, \u0101lasya<\/em>, and nidr\u0101<\/em>, binds (one) fast, through these.<\/span><\/p>\n Pram\u0101da<\/em>=listlessness=the attention being diverted from a work on hand to some other.<\/span><\/p>\n \u0100lasya=sloth = inability to engage in any occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n Nidr\u0101<\/em>=sleep. Owing to a disinclination on the part of the senses to function, sublation of all such activities ensue.
