Chapter 14<\/a><\/p>\n << Chapter 14 verse 7<\/a><\/p>\n thamas thvagyAnajam vidhdhi mOhanam sarvadhehinAm |<\/em> bhAratha – Oh descendant of bharatha! Oh descendant of bharatha! As for thamO guNam (quality of ignorance),\u00a0know that it is caused by misunderstanding the nature of entities; and for all AthmAs who have bodies, it causes knowledge which is contrary to righteousness; it binds the AthmA by causing carelessness, lethargy and sleep.<\/p>\n ‘As for Tamas, Bh\u0101rata! it begets<\/a> ignorance, fascinating all embodied (beings): by listlessness does it bind (one) to sloth<\/a> and sleep.’<\/span><\/p>\n Aj\u00f1\u0101na<\/em>=ignorance is that which is the reverse of knowledge or wisdom. J\u00f1\u0101na<\/em> or wisdom is the accurate or right perception of things, and ignorance is perverted or wrong perception. And Tamas<\/em> (lit:<\/em> darkness) is the diametrically opposed or completely reversed perception of what a thing actually is.<\/span><\/p>\n Mohanam<\/em>=that which deludes men into obtuse<\/a> knowledge = Tamas.<\/span><\/p>\n This Tamas, being thus the root of pram\u0101da<\/em>, \u0101lasya<\/em>, and nidr\u0101<\/em>, binds (one) fast, through these.<\/span><\/p>\n Pram\u0101da<\/em>=listlessness=the attention being diverted from a work on hand to some other.<\/span><\/p>\n \u0100lasya=sloth<\/a> = inability to engage in any occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n Nidr\u0101<\/em>=sleep. Owing to a disinclination on the part of the senses to function, sublation of all such activities ensue.
