As for thamO guNam (quality of ignorance),\u00a0know that it is caused by misunderstanding the nature of entities; and for all AthmAs who have bodies, it causes knowledge which is contrary to righteousness; it binds the AthmA by causing carelessness, lethargy and sleep.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;As for Tamas, Bh\u0101rata! it <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/beget#Verb\">begets<\/a> ignorance, fascinating all embodied (beings): by listlessness does it bind (one) to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/sloth#Noun\">sloth<\/a> and sleep.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Aj\u00f1\u0101na<\/em>=ignorance is that which is the reverse of knowledge or wisdom. <em>J\u00f1\u0101na<\/em> or wisdom is the accurate or right perception of things, and ignorance is perverted or wrong perception. And <em>Tamas<\/em> (<em>lit:<\/em> darkness) is the diametrically opposed or completely reversed perception of what a thing actually is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Mohanam<\/em>=that which deludes men into <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/obtuse#Adjective\">obtuse<\/a> knowledge = Tamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Tamas, being thus the root of <em>pram\u0101da<\/em>, <em>\u0101lasya<\/em>, and <em>nidr\u0101<\/em>, binds (one) fast, through these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Pram\u0101da<\/em>=listlessness=the attention being diverted from a work on hand to some other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0100lasya=<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/sloth#Noun\">sloth<\/a> = inability to engage in any occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Nidr\u0101<\/em>=sleep. Owing to a disinclination on the part of the senses to function, sublation of all such activities ensue.
