{"id":5980,"date":"2017-11-01T19:07:02","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T19:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=5980"},"modified":"2024-11-28T11:23:20","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T11:23:20","slug":"14-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/14-18\/","title":{"rendered":"14.18 Urdhvam gachchanthi sathvasthA:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 14<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/14-17\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 14 verse 17<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/14-18-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>Urdhvam gachchanthi saththvasthA: madhyE thishtanthi rAjasA: |<\/em><br \/>\n<em> jaghanyaguNavruththisthA: adhO gachchanthi thAmas\u0101: ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning<\/h3>\n<p>saththvasthA: &#8211; those who have abundance of sathva guNam<br \/>\nUrdhvam gachchanthi &#8211; (eventually) reach the higher position of mOksham (liberation);<br \/>\nrAjasA: &#8211; those who have abundance of rajO guNam<br \/>\nmadhyE thishtanthi &#8211; suffer in middle level births (which mostly give sorrow only);<br \/>\nthAmasA: &#8211; those who have abundance of thamO guNam<br \/>\njaghanya guNa vruththisthA: &#8211; being further engaged in inferior thamO guNam activities<br \/>\nadhO gachchanthi &#8211; attain very lowly births (due to increased ignorance).<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation<\/h3>\n<p>Those who have abundance of sathva guNam, (eventually) reach the higher position of mOksham (liberation); those who have abundance of rajO guNam, suffer in middle level births (which mostly give sorrow only); those who have abundance of thamO guNam, being further engaged in inferior thamO guNam activities, attain very lowly births (due to increased ignorance).<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Upward rise those fixed in Satva; in the middle<br \/>\nstay those of Rajas; downward go those fixed in the low impulses of Tamas-quality.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus in the manner explained, those who are established in Satva <em>rise upward<\/em>, <em>i.e.<\/em>, gradually accomplish liberation from sams\u0101ra-bondage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Staying in the middle<\/em> are those who from a greed for Svarga and such like fruits are of Rajas-disposition, who therefore engage in such activities as would fetch them reward; and then getting it and enjoying it, they are born again, and again engage in similar works. Hence, inasmuch as this quality is attended with recurrence of (material) births, it is full of misery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those of Tamas are engaged in low occupations, and descend more and more into doing meaner acts. These <em>go downward<\/em>, <em>i.e.<\/em>, retrograde into the lowest types of humanity, then back into animals, then worms, insects etc, then into plants, going even there into the condition of creepers and thickets; thence still more back into the condition of grass (the lowest type of plants), sticks, clod, stones etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the upward ascent takes place is now explained, \u2014 by those who, by adopting a strict course of food[1. As detailed in <em>Bh: Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/17-7-original\/\">XVII-7<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/17-8-original\/\">8<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/6-16-original\/\">VI-16<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/6-17-original\/\">17<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-52-original\/\">XVIII-52<\/a>.], and by the disinterested[2.
