{"id":6118,"date":"2017-11-19T23:48:48","date_gmt":"2017-11-19T23:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=6118"},"modified":"2017-11-19T23:48:48","modified_gmt":"2017-11-19T23:48:48","slug":"15-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/15-4\/","title":{"rendered":"15.4 tham Eva chAdhyam purusham prapadhyEdh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 15<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/15-3_15-3-5\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 15 verses 3 and 3.5<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/15-4-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>tham Eva chAdhyam purusham prapadhyEdh yatha: pravruththi: prasruthA purANI ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning  <\/h3>\n<p>Adhyam &#8211; being the primeval lord for everything<br \/>\nyatha: purANI pravruththi: prasruthA &#8211; from whom, (the AthmAs&#8217;) connection with matters related to the three qualities is continuing since time immemorial<br \/>\ntham purusham Eva &#8211; only that supreme lord<br \/>\nprapadhyEth &#8211; should surrender (to have the ignorance etc removed).<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation  <\/h3>\n<p>The jIvAthmA should surrender (to have the ignorance etc removed) to that supreme lord only, who is the primeval lord for everything and from whom, (the AthmAs&#8217;) connection with matters related to the three qualities, is continuing since time immemorial.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Let Him the Primal Purusha alone be sought as the Refuge \u2014He from Whom is the old will (or impulses) derived.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is Primal or the Beginning of everything, as declared in such Stanzas as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018By Me the Presider, matter begets all the Mobiles and the Immobiles\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/9-10-original\/\">IX-10<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018I am the Origin of all, from Me operates everything.\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/10-8-original\/\">X-8<\/a>).)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Naught whatsoever higher than I the Primal Purusha; exists, Dhana\u00f1jaya!\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/7-6-5-original\/\">VII-6.5<\/a>);<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and let Him therefore be sought as the Refuge, inasmuch as all old material instincts in the shape of attachment for Gu\u1e47a-charged enjoyments proceed from Him, the all-Creator (vide, <em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/14-3-original\/\">XIV 3<\/a> <em>and<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/14-4-original\/\">4<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Myself have already declared:\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Verily is this My divine M\u0101y\u0101 Gu\u1e47a-full, hard to surmount. Those who resort to Me alone as their Refuge, do pass this M\u0101y\u0101.\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/7-14-original\/\">VII-14<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A variant in this Stanza is \u2018<em>prapady-cyata\u1e25<\/em>\u2019. Instead of \u2018<em>prapadyed-yata\u1e25<\/em>\u2019. In this case the division of the former compound term would be \u2018<em>prapadya, iyata\u1e25<\/em>\u2019; The interpretation of the Stanza would then stand thus:-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018By the mere step taken (<em>iyata<\/em>) <em>viz.<\/em>, of having taken Him as Refuge, all those (spiritual) instincts of old will awaken in him.
