Keeping the mind clear and free from anger etc<br \/>\nsaumyathvam &#8211; thinking about the well-being of others<br \/>\nmaunam &#8211; controlling the speech through mind<br \/>\nAthma vinigraha: &#8211; restraining the mind from worldly matters and engaging it in the meditation of apt aspects<br \/>\nbhAva samsudhdhi: &#8211; being without any thought other than AthmA<br \/>\nithi Ethath &#8211; all these<br \/>\nmAnasam thapa: &#8211; penance of the mind<br \/>\nuchyathE &#8211; said<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation  <\/h3>\n<p>Keeping the mind clear and free from anger etc, thinking about the well-being of others, controlling the speech through mind, restraining the mind from worldly matters and engaging it in the meditation of apt aspects, being without any thought other than AthmA are all said to be the penance of the mind.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;That is called Mental Austerity, which consists in good temper, benevolence, quietude, self-control, and purity of purpose.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Mana\u1e25-pras\u0101da\u1e25<\/em> = Good-temper, or mind kept free of anger etc.,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Saumyatvam<\/em> = Benevolence, or mind filled with love for others\u2019 happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Maunam<\/em> = Quietude, or by will restraining the function of speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u0100tma-vinigraha\u1e25<\/em> = Self-control or fixing the mind or keeping the mind engaged in the (holy) objects of contemplation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Bh\u0101va-sa\u1e43\u015buddhi\u1e25<\/em> = Purity of purpose = Absence of thoughts wandering away on subjects other than \u0101tma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These constitute the Mental Tapas or Austerity of the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/17-17\">&gt;&gt;
