PROEM<\/h3>\n

BY the two preceding Lectures (XVI and XVII), the following matters were discussed:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. That the only Means for achieving either material prosperity (abhyudaya<\/em>) or spiritual freedom (ni\u015b-\u015breyas), is the observance of Yaj\u00f1a[1. Ritualistic Sacrifices.], Tapas[2. Austerities, such as mortification of the flesh by fasting &c.] and D\u0101na[3. Gifts\/Charitable works.], along the lines laid down by the Veda; and no other.<\/li>\n
  2. That all Vaidika-observances are commonly characterized by the use of Pra\u1e47ava (OM) in relation therewith.<\/li>\n
  3. That the difference between the Means leading to Moksha and that leading to material goods, is symbolized by the term TAT, for the former, and SAT for the latter.<\/li>\n
  4. That Yaj\u00f1a etc., when performed for the sake of acquiring Moksha, must be performed without aiming at fruit.<\/li>\n
  5. That so performing them is the result of the Satva-Gu\u1e47a gaining prominence; and that Satva-growth is caused by taking S\u0101tvika-food.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Next (in this Lecture), the following points are expounded:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Ty\u0101ga[1. Ty\u0101ga is literally \u2018giving up\u2019.] and Sanny\u0101sa[2. Sanny\u0101sa is literally \u2018putting away\u2019. Both terms (Ty\u0101ga and Sanny\u0101sa) mean renunciation, resignation, or surrender; their technical application may be learnt in the following pages, and also their ultimate significance.] indicated as Means to Moksha, are identical.<\/li>\n
    2. The nature of Ty\u0101ga.<\/li>\n
    3. The contemplation that in the Sovereign Lord Bhagav\u0101n rests the agency of all acts.<\/li>\n
    4. A description of the effects produced by the Gu\u1e47as Satva, Rajas and Tamas, in order to show that Satva alone is worthy of acceptance for culture).<\/li>\n
    5. How the acts appropriate to Castes, \u2014which are but acts of worship to Paramapurusha\u2014 effect or accomplish the gaining of Paramapurusha. And that,<\/li>\n
    6. The Quintessence of the Holy Writ of Bhagavad-g\u012bta, is the Teaching or Exposition of Bhakti-Yoga.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
