Chapter 18<\/a><\/p>\n << Chapter 18 Verse 4<\/a><\/p>\n yagyadhAnathapa: karma na thyAjyam kAryam Eva thath |<\/em> yagya dhAna thapa: karma – vaidhika karmas such as yagya (sacrifice), dhAnam (charity), thapas (penance) (because) vaidhika karmas such as yagya (sacrifice), dhAnam (charity), thapas (penance) cannot be given up (by mumukshus (liberation seekers)); they are to be performed (till the end); (because) they are purifying acts (which remove the long-standing hurdles which stop the upAsana from completing) for those upAsakas (practitioners) who desire for liberation.<\/p>\n \u2018Work, \u2014Yaj\u00f1a, D\u0101na and Tapas, should never be abandoned; it must of necessity be done; for Yaj\u00f1a, D\u0101na and Tapas sanctify the wise.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n Never, by the Moksha-aspirant, are Vaidika-acts such as Yaj\u00f1a, D\u0101na, Tapas and the rest, to be abdicated; but must be daily practised until the last day of death. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n Because those acts pertaining as they do to the several var\u1e47as<\/em> and \u0101\u015bramas<\/em>[1. The four var\u1e47as<\/em> are Br\u0101hma\u1e47a, Kshatriya, Vai\u015bya and \u015a\u016bdra. The four a\u015bramas<\/em> are Brahmacharya (bachelor and student), G\u0101rhastya (married life), V\u0101naprastha (retired forest life) and Sany\u0101sa (monastic or ascetic life).] (\u2018castes\u2019 and \u2018orders\u2019 of life) do purify the wise (manishi\u1e47ah<\/em>) = the thoughtful or reflecting persons.<\/span><\/p>\n The thoughtfulness or reflection here meant is up\u0101sana<\/em> or religious meditation, in which the Moksha-aspirant is supposed to be engaged till the last.
