Such abstention out of misconception, is considered as T\u0101masa.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescribed (<em>niyata<\/em>) duties are the Nitya, Naimittika etc., \u2014the Mah\u0101yaj\u00f1a[1. The daily duties (<em>nitya<\/em>) are Sn\u0101na, Sandhy\u0101, Vai\u015bvadeva-brahma-yaj\u00f1a, Deva-\u1e5bshi-pit\u1e5bi-tarpa\u1e47a, and Aup\u0101sana. The occassioned (<em>naimittika<\/em>) are the \u015ar\u0101ddh\u0101s, Tarpa\u1e47as, etc., performed on the Eclipse-day, Sa\u1e47kranti, Mah\u0101laya, etc., P\u016brva-M\u012bm\u0101msa says: &#8216;nitya naimittika karm\u0101chara\u1e47e phalam n\u0101sti; akara\u1e47e pratyav\u0101ya\u1e25&#8217;. The five Great Sacraments (Mah\u0101yaj\u00f1a) or Acts of Divine Worship ordained for every holy man are:- 1. <em>Adhy\u0101pana<\/em> = The teaching of the Sacred Scriptures, etc., called <em>Brahma-yaj\u00f1a<\/em>. 2. <em>Tarpa\u1e47a<\/em> = The oblation of water, food, etc., called <em>Pit\u1e5bi-yaj\u00f1a<\/em>. 3. <em>Homa<\/em> = The offering of clarified butter, etc., into fire, called <em>Deva-yaj\u00f1a<\/em>. 4. <em>Bali<\/em> = The distribution of food to creatures in general, called <em>Bh\u016bta-yaj\u00f1a<\/em>. 5. <em>Athiti-p\u016bjana<\/em> = entertainment of holy guests, called <em>N\u1e5bi-yaj\u00f1a<\/em>. Vide <em>Manu<\/em>, III 69 to 73.]. Ceasing altogether to perform them is not rightful, as according to: \u2018Actionless, thou shalt not be able even to sustain thy bodily existence\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/3-8-original\/\">III-8<\/a>), even bodily existence would (without action) be impossible. As for sustaining bodily existence, it (has been shown that it) must be done from partaking of the vestiges of food after its consecratian to Yaj\u00f1a, only such food being conducive to produce holy knowledge. Otherwise, as declared in: \u2018But those who cook for self-enjoyment \u2014sinners\u2014 incur sin\u2019 (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/3-13-original\/\">III-13<\/a>), food unconsecrated to Yaj\u00f1a is sinful, and such food is productive of erroneous knowledge in the mind. For, as affirmed by the \u015aruti: &#8216;O Somya! mind verily is formed of food,\u2019[2. <em>Chh: Up\u00b0:<\/em> VI-5-4 and VII-26-2 \u2018Anna-mayam etc.\u2019] etc., mind is by food verily fed and nourished; also, that knowledge of the kind of direct <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/apperception#Noun\">apperception<\/a> of Brahm (<em>Brahma-s\u0101ksh\u0101tk\u0101ra<\/em> = God-cognition) is dependent on the purity of food, is evidenced by such passages as: \u2018Food (being) pure, mind (becomes) pure; mind (being) pure, sustained (or perfect)[3. <em>Perfect memory<\/em> means incessant meditation or memory of God.] memory (ensues); memory obtained, the loosening (follows) of all knots (bondage).\u2019[4. <em>Chh: Up\u00b0:<\/em> VI-5-4 and VII-26-2 \u2018Anna-mayam etc.\u2019] <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, since Mah\u0101yaj\u00f1as, etc.,[5. Vide <em>Manu<\/em>, III 69 to 73.] \u2014the Nitya, Naimittika-duties\u2014 practised until the last moment of departure, are worthy of adoption as leading to Brahm-knowledge, <em>abstention therefrom is not <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/meet#Adjective\">meet<\/a><\/em>. The ceasing, thus, to do knowledge-creating work, influenced by ignorance (<em>moha<\/em>) is called t\u0101masa. For to <em>tamas<\/em> as origin is traceable the idea of abstention, arising from ignorance; <em>ergo<\/em>, an effect of <em>tamas<\/em>.
