Chapter 18 Verse 9<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-10-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>na dhvEshtyakuSalam karma kuSalE nAnushajjathE |<\/em><br \/>\n<em> thyAgI sathvasamAvishtO mEdhAvI chinnasamSaya: ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning  <\/h3>\n<p>sathva samAvishta: &#8211; Being in sathva guNam as mentioned previously<br \/>\nmEdhAvI &#8211; (because of that) having true knowledge about the truths<br \/>\nchinna samSaya: &#8211; (because of that) being free from all doubts<br \/>\nthyAgI &#8211; the one who is not attached to the result, doership of karmas<br \/>\nakuSalam karma &#8211; pApa karma (sinful deed), which gives unfavourable result and is thus undesirable<br \/>\nna dhvEshti &#8211; does not hate it<br \/>\nkuSalE (karmaNi) &#8211; puNya karma (pious deed), which gives favourable results and is thus desirable<br \/>\nna anushajjathE &#8211; does not desire for it<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation  <\/h3>\n<p>The one who is not attached to the result, doership of karmas, being in sathva guNam as mentioned previously, (because of that) having true knowledge about the truths, (because of that) being free from all doubts, neither hates pApa karma (sinful deed), which gives unfavourable result and is thus undesirable nor desires puNya karma (pious deed), which gives favourable results and is thus desirable.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;The Renouncer, Satva-imbued, wise and quit of doubt(s), is neither vexed at evil act, nor is (he) in love with good (act).&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, he, the <em>Renouncer<\/em> in act, of attachment, fruit and authorship (or agency=<em>kart\u1e5bitva<\/em>), who is full of Satvam; <em>Wise<\/em> = who has correct knowledge of things, and therefore who is bereft of all doubt; is neither troubled at evil act, nor has he attachment for good act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Evil act<\/em> is that which is fraught with undesirable fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Good act<\/em> is that which brings in such desirable fruit as Svarga, progeny, cattle, food etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inasmuch as \u2018myness\u2019 (<em>mamat\u0101<\/em>) is absent, there is no occasion for exhibiting either of the emotions, hatred for one or love for another; inasmuch too as every other end (fruit) save Brahm, has been resigned; since, also, the notion of \u2018agent\u2019 (of the act) has been given up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Evil act<\/em>, prolific of undesirable fruit, is here intended to indicate that act which one may accidentally or unwittingly happen to perform; not that it means that one may <em>deliberately<\/em> perform a bad act, for that to one, who has not ceased from wickedness, there is every obstacle to obtaining wisdom, is evidenced by the \u015aruti:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Albeit he has Spirit-knowledge (<em>praj\u00f1\u0101na<\/em>), yet if he be one not divorced from vice, not stilled of passions, not calmed of mind, not quit of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/dissipation#Noun\">dissipation<\/a>, he cannot gain Him\u2019.[1. <em>Kath: Up:<\/em> I-2.24. \u2018N\u0101rrato &amp;c.\u2019]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence what the \u015a\u0101stra inculcates is the Renunciation of (1) authorship, (2) attachment and (3) fruit (while doing work); and not total relinquishment of work itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is explained:\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-11\">&gt;&gt;
