{"id":6792,"date":"2018-04-06T23:13:01","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T23:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/?p=6792"},"modified":"2018-04-06T23:13:01","modified_gmt":"2018-04-06T23:13:01","slug":"18-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-17\/","title":{"rendered":"18.17 yasya nAhankruthO bhAvO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 18<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-16\">&lt;&lt; Chapter 18 Verse 16<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>SlOkam \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-17-original\/\">Original<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>yasya nAhankruthO bhAvO budhdhir yasya na lipyathE |<\/em><br \/>\n<em> hathvA&#8217;pi sa imAn lokAn nahanthi na nibadhyathE ||<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>word-by-word meaning  <\/h3>\n<p>yasya bhAva: &#8211; The thoughts of the one (on the doership)<br \/>\nna ahankrutha: &#8211; are not arising from the pride of &#8220;I am the doer&#8221;<br \/>\nyasya budhdhi: &#8211; the intellect of the one<br \/>\nna lipyathE &#8211; is free from the thoughts such as &#8220;the results of this action are mine&#8221;, &#8220;this action is mine&#8221;<br \/>\nsa: &#8211; he<br \/>\nimAn lOkAn hathvA api &#8211; even if he kills all the beings in this world (in a battle)<br \/>\nna hanthi &#8211; will not be considered as the killer;<br \/>\nna nibadhyathE &#8211; will not be bound in this samsAram (material realm) as a result of such killing.<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Translation  <\/h3>\n<p>The one whose thoughts are not arising from the pride of &#8220;I am the doer&#8221;, whose intellect is free from the thoughts such as &#8220;the results of this action are mine&#8221;, &#8220;this action is mine&#8221;, even if he kills all the beings in this world (in a battle), he will not be considered as the killer; he will not be bound in this samsAram (material realm) as a result of such killing.<\/p>\n<h3>Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy\u2019s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;He who is exempt from \u2018self-ness,\u2019 whose mind<br \/>\nis not tainted, \u2014even though he kill those beings, he kills not, nor is he <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/fettered#Adjective\">fettered<\/a>.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Self-ness (=aha\u1e47k\u1e5biti=aha\u1e47k\u0101ra)<\/em> = Egoity = that function of the mind which attaches to one\u2019s own self the notion of \u2018I do the act\u2019 (<em>aham karomi<\/em>) arising out of self-love. This idea is absent in him who is sufficiently enlightened to refer all agentship to Paramapurusha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Whose mind is not tainted<\/em> = \u2018Since I am no (independent) agent, the fruit resulting from the act, does not concern me. The act itself is not mine.\u2019 Whose enlightenment is of this sort, his mind is said to be untainted. The inference is that though he kill all these people (<em>lok\u0101n<\/em>) \u2014<em>i.e.,<\/em> not merely Bh\u012bshma etc.,\u2014 in the conflict, <em>he killeth not<\/em>.
