Chapter 18<\/a><\/p>\n << Chapter 18 Verse 41<\/a><\/p>\n Simple<\/a><\/p>\n \u015bamo damas tapa\u1e25 \u015bauca\u1e41 ‘Restraint, governance, austerity, purity, forgiveness, and uprightness; knowledge, wisdom, faith; \u2014these are duties native to Br\u0101hma\u1e47as.’<\/span><\/p>\n \u015aama<\/em> = Restraint = The Discipline of the outer senses.<\/span><\/p>\n Dama<\/em> = Governance = The Discipline of the inner sense (=anta\u1e25-kara\u1e47a<\/em>=mind).<\/span><\/p>\n Tapas<\/em> = Austerity = The denial or forbearing to indulge one\u2019s own appetites, and imposing on self bodily restrictions dictated by \u015a\u0101stras.<\/span><\/p>\n \u015aaucham<\/em> = Purity = The preparatory holiness required for discharging a \u015a\u0101stra-ordained duty.<\/span><\/p>\n Ksh\u0101nti<\/em> = Forgiveness = The preserving the composure of the mind against provocation offered by other parties.<\/span><\/p>\n \u0100rjavam<\/em> = Uprightness = The correct outward expression to others of what is thought of in the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n J\u00f1\u0101nam<\/em>[1.
