I will deliver thee from all sins. Grieve not.'[1. Cp: Matt: IX-2. \u2018Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee\u2019. This verse is known as the <em>Charama \u015bloka<\/em>, or the quintessence of Bhagavad-G\u012bta-teaching. This verse constitutes one of the Three Rahasyas or Mysteries of the Vi\u015bisht\u0101dvaitis, and voluminous Commentaries have been written thereon. R\u0101m\u0101nuja gives here the ordinary interpretation meaning &#8216;<em>Bhakti<\/em>&#8216; whereas a higher interpretation is &#8216;<em>Prapatti<\/em>&#8216;. An attempt will be made to elucidate this subject in my Second Volume; but in the meanwhile, the Reader is referred to the most valuable Table appended at the end of this work, where he can generally gather some account as to how &#8216;<em>Prapatti<\/em>&#8216; differs from &#8216;<em>Bhakti<\/em>&#8216;.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>All Dharmas<\/em> = All the Paths of Righteousness inculcated in BHAGAVAD-G\u012aTA as Means to Moksha, <em>viz:<\/em> Karma-yoga, J\u00f1\u0101na-yoga and Bhakti-Yoga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Renouncing<\/em> = The practising of these Means as Modes of My worship, and in love; but entirely renouncing or relinquishing, \u2014as explained above (<em>vide<\/em> Commentary to <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-4-original\/\">stanza 4<\/a>;\u2014 (1) the fruit thereof (<em>phala-ty\u0101ga<\/em>) (2) the personal ownership of act, (<em>karma-ty\u0101ga<\/em>) and (3) personal authorship of act (<em>kart\u1e5bitva-ty\u0101ga<\/em>);<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Hold Me<\/em> = Adopt Me <em>i.e.,<\/em> reflect that I am solely The Actor, the Worthy of worship, the End (=the Worthy of acquisition) and the Means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That this is the kind of Renunciation, the \u015a\u0101stras warrant, was emphatically asseverated in the opening of this Lecture, in the following manner:\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Hear from Me, O Bharata-Best! the truth about this Ty\u0101ga (Renunciation). Verily, Renunciation, O Tiger of men! is distinguished as three-fold. (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-4-original\/\">XVIII-4<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018That is deemed S\u0101tvika-Renunciation, where attachment, as also fruit, is renounced. (<em>Gi:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/18-9-original\/\">XVIII-9<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Verily for one housed in a body, to desert work wholesale is not possible; but he is called the Renouncer who renounces the fruit of work. (<em>Gi:<\/em> <em>XVIII-11<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I will from all sins deliver thee:<\/em> If thou behavest thyself in the manner explained, I will deliver thee from all the sins of omission and of commission, cumulated in the long immemorial past, \u2014sins which stand as a bar against thy reaching Me. Grieve not.\u2019 Another interpretation is this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u015ar\u012b Bhagav\u0101n consoles Arjuna in his griefs which may be supposed to be caused by the reflection that <em>Bhakti-Yoga<\/em> is one which has to be practised by a person whose sins have (first) entirely ceased and who dearly loves the Lord, but the sins that obstruct at the very outset of the undertaking of Bhakti-Yoga are endless, and it is impossible to exhaust them by expiatory duties occupying but a short duration, and hence Arjuna reflected on his unfitness to launch on Bhakti-Yoga, and cried out in his helplessness. To console Arjuna in this predicament, the Lord may be understood to have counselled him thus:\u2014 \u2018The endless sins hoarded up in the long past are barriers to Bhakti-Yoga being commenced; and to perform, in the short time thou livest,all the expiatory ceremonies prescribed as appropriate to the several kinds of sins committed, such as K\u1e5bicchra, Ch\u0101ndr\u0101ya\u1e47a, K\u016b\u015bm\u0101nda, Vai\u015bv\u0101nara, Vr\u0101tapati, Pavitreshti, Triv\u1e5bit, Agnis\u1e6dhoma, <em>et hoc<\/em>,[2. Expiatory penances. See Manu XI-217, Hem\u0101dri and other Dharma-\u015a\u0101stras which give detailed rules. <em>Tapas<\/em>, Rajendralal Mitra L.L.D., C.I.E., translates, as &#8216;religious austerity or self-denial&#8217;, p. 60. <em>Yoga S\u016btras<\/em>.] \u2014ceremonies these, of various kinds, countless, and difficult of performance\u2014 is out of the question.
