Dh\u1e5bitar\u0101shtra.]! With a smile did H\u1e5bish\u012bke\u015ba regard him (Arjuna), who thus stood sad between the two armies; and He spoke to him these words:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beholding Arjuna overwhelmed with grief at not knowing the distinction between the true nature of body (matter) and soul (<em>\u0101tm\u0101<\/em>), and yet discoursing in a fashion that one, with a knowledge of soul existing as apart from body, would adopt, &#8211; a position of conflicting views for Arjuna -; beholding him, suddenly languishing into inactivity when both the armies were ready to engage in war, Paramapurusha lectured to him smilingly, commencing from verse:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Never at all was, that I was not, etc;\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and ending with,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018I shall deliver thee from all sins, etc;\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embodying the three-fold doctrines of Karma-Yoga[5. <em>Yoga<\/em> here means method, path or means. &#8216;<em>Karma-Yoga<\/em>&#8216; is thus &#8216;the method of Works&#8217; or doing deeds of virtue as inculcated in Scriptural and other ethical codes.], J\u00f1\u0101na-Yoga[6. &#8216;<em>J\u00f1\u0101na-Yoga<\/em>&#8216; is &#8216;the Method of Knowledge.&#8217;], and Bhakti-Yoga[7. &#8216;<em>Bhakti-Yoga<\/em>&#8216; is &#8216;the Method of Loving Devotion.&#8217; By these Methods one is to <em>know<\/em> (1) his Soul, (2) <em>know<\/em> his God, and (3) <em>find<\/em> them. I use the word &#8216;find&#8217; so that it might suit the <em>moksha<\/em>-idea of any of the three Schools, Dvaita, Advaita or Vi\u015bisht\u0101dvaita. Throughout my translation, I retain the original expressions <em>Karma-Yoga<\/em>, <em>J\u00f1\u0101na-Yoga<\/em>, and <em>Bhakti-Yoga<\/em>, as far as possible, the convenience of which will be evident.], which are the Means for acquiring the true knowledge of \u0100tm\u0101 (soul) Param\u0101tma[10.
