Oh arjuna! Listen (as it is) to my individual explanation on the three variations of intellect (of analysing and firmly determining) and firm stand (even if there are hurdles in the karma which is started), based on the three-fold qualities.
Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy’s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam
‘Listen Dhanañjaya! to the distinction of Reason and Purpose made threefold by the Guṇas; —completely and severally to be described.’
Reason (buddhi)=the ratiocinative faculty, or the intelligence which wisely determines.
Purpose (dhṛiti) = The resolve, steadfastness or courage to stand any trial which may attend the prosecution of a work undertaken.
Hear the threefold distinctions of these rendered so by the Guṇas:—
