<< Chapter 18 Verse 57.5

SlOkam – Original

atha chEth thvam ahankArAn na SrOshyasi vinankshyasi ||

word-by-word meaning

atha – otherwise
thvam – you
ahankArAn – with the pride of thinking yourself to be all-knowing
na SrOshyasi chEth – if you don’t listen to me
vinankshyasi – you will perish.

Simple Translation

Otherwise, with the pride of thinking yourself to be all-knowing, if you don’t listen to me, you will perish.

Rendering based on ALkoNdavilli gOvindhAchArya swAmy’s English translation of gIthA bhAshyam

‘But if from egotism you will not heed (Me)
you will perish.’

Egotism (ahaṅkāra) = the notion of selfness: I know well what is proper to be done and what is not. If from such notion you will pay no heed to Me, you will become a ruined person. For verily no one except Myself, amongst the infinity of creatures, is a knower of what is proper, or not, to be done; nor is there (amongst them) a Governor like Myself.
