Chapter 1

Simple

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca

dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre
samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva
kim akurvata sañjaya

Dhritarashtra asked:–”O Sañjaya! What did my people and the Paṇḍavās do, assembled on the plains of Kurukshetra1 -the land of Dharma (righteousness)-, to carry on war?”
