<< Chapter 2 verse 34

Simple

bhayād raṇād uparataṁ
maṁsyante tvāṁ mahā-rathāḥ
yeṣāṁ ca tvaṁ bahu-mato
bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam

‘The Great-carred[1. The Great-carreed, thy equals.] will think thee retired from the battlefield from fear. Having been before honored by them, thou shall then be slighted.’

Whereas, hitherto, thou wert held in high esteem as a hero and fit opponent by such valiant men as Karṇa, Duryodhana etc., thou wouldst in their eyes appear light, by thy ceasing to act, just on the eve of battle. Those great-carred heroes would surely impute thy abstention from fight to feelings of dread. Vindication of retirement by motives of friendship for relatives etc., is not considered a propriety for heroes and belligerents.
