Chapter 5

Simple

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
sannyāsaḥ karma-yogaś ca
niḥśreyasa-karāv ubhau
tayos tu karma-sannyāsāt
karma-yogo viśiṣyate

‘Renunciation and Karma-Yoga, both conduct
to bliss. Of these two however, Karma-Yoga is declared better than Karma-renouncal.’

Sannyāsa (lit: putting away) is cessation from work, and therefore means Jñāna-Yoga.

Both Jñāna-Yoga and Karma-Yoga, are each, independently capable of achieving bliss. But of the two, however, Karma-Yoga is better than Jñāna-Yoga, —the renunciation of works.

If it be asked how this is, it is said:—
