buddher bhedaṁ dhṛteś caiva
guṇatas tri-vidhaṁ śṛṇu
procyamānam aśeṣeṇa
pṛthaktvena dhanañ-jaya
‘Listen Dhanañjaya! to the distinction of Reason and Purpose made threefold by the Guṇas; —completely and severally to be described.’
Reason (buddhi)=the ratiocinative faculty, or the intelligence which wisely determines.
Purpose (dhṛiti) = The resolve, steadfastness or courage to stand any trial which may attend the prosecution of a work undertaken.
