Chapter 8

Simple

sahasra-yuga-paryantam
ahar yad brahmaṇo viduḥ
rātriṁ yuga-sahasrāntāṁ
te ’ho-rātra-vido janāḥ

‘Those men know what the Day and the Night of Brahmā is, who know that the Day spans one thousand Yugas, and the Night, one thousand Yugas1.’

  1. Kali-yuga = 360,000;
    Sandhi = 72,000
    Total = 432,000 mortal years = 1200 Divine years

    Dvāpara-yuga= 720,000;
    Sandhi = 144,000
    Total = 864,000 mortal years = 2400 Divine years

    Tretā-yuga = 1,080,000;
    Sandhi = 216,000
    Total = 1,296,000 mortal years = 3600 Divine years

    Kṛita-yuga = 1,440,000;
    Sandhi = 288,000
    Total = 1,728,000 mortal years = 4800 Divine years.

    Total of Four Yugas = 4,320,000 = one Mahā-yuga.
    1000 Mahā-yugas = A Day of Brahmā
    1000 Mahā-yugas = A Night of Brahmā
    A Day of Brahmā + A Night of Brahmā = A Kalpa
    360 Kalpas = one year of Brahmā; 100 such years = a Mahā—Kalpa = The age of Brahmā. Vide also, Note 1, verse 4.8.
